Odegaard Undergraduate Library
University of Washington | Seattle, WA
With more than 10,000 students using the building each day, Odegaard is the University of Washington’s busiest building and a true center of campus life. The dark and “heavy” space wrapped in a brutalist shell was given a new and extended life — a template for leveraging existing buildings in a sustainable way.
Removing floor areas, concrete stairs, and cutting a large skylight in the roof, a new unifying three-story atrium space provides daylight and a place to see-and-be-seen for UW undergraduates (while studying, of course). Custom milled and bleached wood slats from the salvaged honey-oak paneling in the original structure ground the space to the original without the usual nostalgia and baggage.
Odegaard Undergraduate Library was awarded numerous AIA Honors and Awards, from both AIA Washington and AIA National.
As Project Manager, Adin led the design and construction of the University of Washington Odegaard Library while at the Miller Hull Partnership, where he was a Principal.
